User Reviews about DIRECTV Plus® HR24 High Definition MPEG-4 DVR (HR-24) HD DVR
After reading tons of hype on this new DirecTV receiver, I couldn't wait to order one. I already own (lease) four HR22-100 receivers, and haven't had a single problem with them other than a slow guide when watching in HD. This new HR24 was supposed to be much faster, which is one reason why I wanted to give it a try, but to my surprise, it really isn't that much faster than the HR22's I have. Yes, its a tad bit quicker, but there's still a pause at times when browsing the guide.
The biggest addition to the features of the HR24 is the built-in whole home DVR hardware, but I don't use that feature so I can't comment on how good or bad it works.
One things for sure, the overall size of this receiver is a lot smaller than the previous models it replaces. Even though the HR24 is still the standard 15" wide, it is only 2 1/8" tall x 9 3/4" deep compared to a huge 2 3/4" tall x 11 5/8" deep HR22. This new size makes it much easier to fit in entertainment centers where the previous models were sometimes too large to fit at all.
Overall, I give it 5 stars because it works exactly as advertised, looks great, and is much smaller than the receivers it has replaced. If you are looking at this receiver because you want to upgrade from a non-HD or non-DVR receiver, I would say to definitely get this model. On the other hand, if you already own an HD-DVR receiver, and are contemplating on getting this new receiver in hopes of a performance increase, I'd say to save your money. The overall performance of this receiver compared to the previous models is so close, in my opinion, that it's not worth spending another $200. I was planning on upgrading all four HR22's to this new HR24, if I noticed enough of a difference, but now that I have experienced it first-hand, I'll be hanging on to my HR22's. -- Works great, but was expecting more
I purchased this unit to add to my DirecTV collection of HD-DVRs. I own the HR22-100, and this HR24-500 is superior in the following ways:
* Speed - everything is snappier. Scrolling, channel changing, menu changes, and response to the remote.
* Acoustic Noise - it's quieter than the HR22. It uses a small, barely audible cooling fan.
* Size - physically about 25% smaller than the HR22.
Picture quality is the same as the HR22 (which is excellent).
The only downside is that this unit lacks an RF out that could connect to a slave TV over a coaxial cable. No big deal, really.
Bottom line, excellent purchase. Highly recommended. -- Best DirecTV Unit Available Today
So far it's really fast and really sleek looking. Compared to the HR20 I had before this thing is night and day. Definitely a good choice. -- So far so good with this box
Great job DirecTV!!!
Finally, a truly enjoyable DVR from DirecTV that just works.
It's fast unlike their previous HR20. It has decent network
DVR features, that are likely to expand with time.
I can't wait until later this fall when they roll out a DVR
using Tivo software.
Buy this and trade out your old HR20 for this. DirecTv will
send you a box with prepaid postage and refund the cost of
your original DVR over 20 months. Basically $10 a month.

Much better unit then the HR24 DVR it replaced. Guide screen and channel switching much FASTER. The privious model HR 23 would sometimes be annoying slow. This unit is rock solid, smaller, quieter and seems to run cooler then HR 23DVR. The RF remote that comes with the unit is awesome. Wish all my components were RF so I wouldn't need an IR repeater. Nice to be able to tuck everything neatly in the cabinets.
Picture quality is awesome and he HR24 does a better job at decompressing, processing weak or not so perfect Satellite signal. It is very rare that I don't have a perfect picture.
Definetly a great upgrade. -- DirecTV box HR-24 HD DVR box
